Justice Department Creates Cybersecurity Prosecutor Unit

The U.S. Justice Department is creating a unit within the criminal division to advise on electronic surveillance in cyber investigations and work with the private sector to prevent online crime.

The new unit, housed within the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property section, will work with law enforcement, the private sector, and Congress, said a Reuters report.

“It is important that we address cyber threats on multiple fronts, with both a robust enforcement strategy as well as a broad prevention strategy,” said Leslie Caldwell in prepared remarks before a cybercrime conference, saidReuters.

China must create “a playing field where competition policy promotes the welfare of consumers and doesn’t benefit just one set of companies over another,” Obama said during remarks Monday at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

“We look to China to become an innovative economy that values the protection of intellectual property rights, and rejects cyber theft of trade secrets for commercial gain,” he added.

The two countries have clashed repeatedly over cyberattacks this past year.
